Studio Ghibli fans will soon have another reason to head to Gardens by the Bay.
The Story of Studio Ghibli is set to open at Gardens by the Bay this December, bringing 12 life-sized recreations inspired by some of the Japanese animation studio’s best-known films to Singapore. Spanning nearly 3,500 square metres at the West Lawn, the Singapore edition will be the largest presentation of the exhibition to date.
The exhibition runs from 18 December 2026 to 4 July 2027, with public admission currently scheduled to begin on 19 December.
Step inside 12 Studio Ghibli worlds
Rather than focusing mainly on artwork and production materials, The Story of Studio Ghibli is designed as a walk-through experience that puts visitors inside familiar scenes from the films.
The 12 recreated worlds draw from titles including Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle and The Boy and the Heron.
Among the highlights is a rainy bus stop scene from My Neighbor Totoro, where visitors can stand alongside Totoro while waiting for the Catbus. Fans of Kiki’s Delivery Service will also be able to enter the Guchokipanya bakery and begin a recreation of Kiki’s delivery journey.
Other areas include the mystical forest from Princess Mononoke, brought to life with large-scale sets, projections and multimedia elements, as well as encounters with the giant Ohmu from Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind.
Expect Large-Scale Sets and Immersive Installations
One of the exhibition’s biggest installations comes from Spirited Away.
Visitors will come face-to-face with the world’s first eight-metre-tall 3D recreation of the film’s bathhouse, before entering its boiler room. Inside, animatronics bring Kamaji and his many moving arms to life among the drawers and machinery.
Interactive multimedia installations will also be placed throughout the exhibition, adding movement, sound and other interactive elements to the recreated environments.
